Europe's stockpiled Leopard 1 tanks are being rebuilt for Ukraine's war
Leopard 1 tanks that Europe stored for decades for a Cold War conflict that never happened are now being refitted for Ukraine — some with unmanned Belgian-made turrets, others converted in Italy into anti-drone vehicles funded with frozen Russian assets.
For decades, European countries kept stockpiles of Leopard 1 tanks, originally acquired during the Cold War in preparation for a potential confrontation with the Soviet Union that never materialized. Now some of these older tanks are being pulled out of storage and reworked so they can be used by Ukraine's military in its war against Russia.
One group of these tanks — 31 in total — is being fitted with unmanned turrets manufactured in Belgium. This upgrade allows the crew to be reduced to just three people, since the turret no longer requires a crew member inside it to operate. The change is intended to make the vehicles more efficient while lowering the risk to soldiers in combat.
Others turned into drone killers
A separate batch of the old tanks is being converted for a different purpose: turning them into what are described as "drone killers," vehicles built specifically to counter unmanned aerial threats. This conversion work is taking place in Italy. Notably, it is being financed using frozen Russian assets — funds that were blocked by Western countries following Russia's invasion of Ukraine.
The approach reflects an effort by European states to combine two goals at once: putting otherwise unused, aging military hardware to work, and channeling frozen Russian money toward supporting Ukraine. As drone warfare has become an increasingly central feature of the battlefield for both sides, specialized platforms designed to counter aerial drones are gaining growing importance along the front line.
