The top eight sides go straight to the round of 16, teams placed 9th to 24th enter a knockout play-off round, and the rest are out of European competition for the season. This format is being used for the third season in a row. Last season Aston Villa of Birmingham won the tournament, beating Germany's Freiburg 3:0 in the final.
