European Parliament to establish office in Canada
The European Parliament plans to open a representative office in Canada to strengthen transatlantic parliamentary cooperation, following backing from Parliament leadership.
The leadership of the European Parliament has endorsed a plan to set up a new office in Canada, expanding its network of overseas representations. Parliament President Roberta Metsola announced the decision on social media following a leadership meeting, describing it as a way to build a stronger presence that facilitates parliamentary exchanges across the Atlantic, with a regional reach extending as far as the Arctic.
In her post, Metsola framed the move as a continuation of a long-standing relationship, calling Europe and Canada old friends still writing the next chapter of their partnership together.
How the office will operate
The new Parliament presence will take the form of an "antenna office," with representatives working alongside the existing EU delegation to Canada in Ottawa. That delegation currently falls under the management of the European External Action Service.
According to a Parliament press release, the office is intended to serve as an important platform for parliamentary engagement on matters of growing strategic importance to both the EU and Canada.
The Canada office would not be the Parliament's first venture of this kind. It has maintained a presence in Ukraine since September 2025, and it already operates in several non-EU locations, including Ethiopia — where it engages with the African Union — as well as Moldova, the United Kingdom, Indonesia, the United States and Panama.
