European nations weigh releasing diesel reserves amid US pressure
Britain, France and Germany held a crisis meeting on Thursday to craft a joint response to the Trump administration's push for European countries to release their diesel reserves, as Ireland's energy minister voices hope Washington will abandon a threatened export ban.
Several European countries, including the United Kingdom, France and Germany, convened an emergency meeting on Thursday to coordinate a "resolute" response to pressure from the US administration demanding the release of national diesel fuel reserves.
The pressure stems from US Energy Secretary Chris Wright, who reportedly approached multiple EU member states, including Germany, with an ultimatum: tap into their diesel reserves or face a ban on US diesel exports.
Not all European officials view the threat as imminent, however. Irish Energy Minister Darragh O'Brien said that, based on information available to him, Washington currently has "no aspirations" to move in that direction, suggesting optimism that the US administration may abandon its plan to halt diesel exports to Europe.
The episode highlights growing tension between the United States and its European allies over energy policy, as the Trump administration seeks leverage abroad while addressing domestic market concerns. European governments must now weigh how far they can draw down strategic fuel reserves without jeopardizing their own energy security ahead of the winter heating season.
