Eurovision to Ban War-Involved Nations From Hosting, but Not From Competing
Eurovision organisers have introduced a rule barring countries involved in war from hosting the song contest, a change that affects Israel, which last hosted the event in 2019.
The organisers of the Eurovision Song Contest have decided that nations engaged in war will no longer be permitted to host the annual competition. The rule directly affects Israel, which most recently hosted Eurovision in 2019.
Under the new policy, hosting rights would be reassigned to another country even if a nation involved in war were to win the contest. The restriction, however, applies only to hosting duties — it does not affect a country's ability to take part in the competition itself. Israel therefore remains free to continue competing in future editions of Eurovision.
Protesters have pointed to this distinction as a key limitation of the new rule. While the hosting ban acknowledges Israel's involvement in war, it leaves untouched Israel's ongoing participation in the contest each year, which protesters say remains their central objection.
The policy could also apply to other countries that find themselves in a state of war at the time they would be expected to host the contest, extending beyond the current situation involving Israel.
