Estonia's EKRE Opposition Party Challenges Madise's Registration as Presidential Candidate
Estonia's opposition Conservative People's Party (EKRE) has contested in court the registration of Chancellor of Justice Ülle Madise as a presidential candidate. The complaint was forwarded to the court by the Electoral Committee.
Estonia's Electoral Committee has forwarded to the court a complaint filed by nine members of parliament from the opposition Conservative People's Party (EKRE). The complaint challenges the decision to register current Chancellor of Justice Ülle Madise as a candidate for the presidency.
By referring the matter to the court, the Electoral Committee is leaving the final decision on the legality of Madise's candidacy to the judiciary rather than ruling on the dispute itself.
Ülle Madise currently serves as Chancellor of Justice, an independent constitutional institution in Estonia responsible for overseeing the compliance of laws with the constitution and the lawfulness of state institutions' actions. Her nomination as a presidential candidate has drawn objections from EKRE lawmakers, who turned to the Electoral Committee demanding a review of the registration decision.
It is not yet known when the court will rule on the complaint or how this will affect the further course of Estonia's presidential election.
