EKRE starts coalition negotiations with Isamaa in Pärnu
The EKRE faction in the Pärnu City Council declared the current coalition dissolved and began negotiations with Isamaa to form a new coalition.
EKRE announces coalition collapse
The EKRE faction in the Pärnu City Council met on Friday, July 24, to discuss the situation in the coalition and the proposal from Isamaa to start negotiations, according to ERR.
According to EKRE, the current coalition has ceased to exist due to a lack of honesty and mutual trust. Valmar Veste, chairman of the EKRE regional branch in Pärnu, stated that cooperation is difficult when partners are no longer on the same page. He emphasized that trust is a prerequisite for effective collaboration.
EKRE has spent hours looking for ways to continue the coalition's work but concluded that the version of reality presented by Mayor Kristel Voltenberg does not match EKRE's experience or the actual events.
Attempt to form a new coalition
On Friday, Isamaa invited the Centre Party and EKRE to form a new coalition. On October 24 of last year, five political parties signed a coalition agreement that stipulated Voltenberg would serve as mayor for the first two years, to be replaced by an EKRE representative in 2026.
The Pärnu City Council has 39 seats. A coalition of EKRE, Isamaa, and the Centre Party would have 21 votes.
Internal disagreements became public on Tuesday when City Council Chairman Andrei Korobeinik (Centre Party) announced that Mayor Voltenberg abruptly left a coalition council meeting, interrupting discussions on the coalition's work. Korobeinik accused coalition partners of breaking agreements, while Voltenberg responded that the current coalition had exhausted itself.
