Learning English has become a necessity in today's global world, and parents often wonder how best to help their child expand their vocabulary. Specialists from the learning center "IH Rīga-Satva" note that vocabulary development is a purposeful process that depends on the child's age.

Ages 3-4

At this age, a child's active vocabulary in their native language typically ranges from 100 to 300 words, related to everyday objects, actions, and emotions. A similar amount can be learned in English if lessons are based on play. Experts recommend using picture cards, songs and cartoons, as well as books with large illustrations to promote associations.

Ages 7-9

When starting school, a child's vocabulary reaches 500–1000 words. At this stage, the child can talk about themselves, their interests, and school, and express themselves in simple sentences. From around age 8, children can focus for a 45-minute lesson, making it a good time to start group or online courses. Recommended methods include role play, puzzles and riddles, and illustrated literature at an appropriate level.

From Age 12

For teenagers, vocabulary increases to 2000–3000 words, including school subject terms, more complex grammatical constructions, and terms from hobbies, technology, and pop culture. At this age, it is effective to watch authentic content such as movies, series, and YouTube videos in the original language, read interest-based literature, and engage in active discussions.

Patience and Regularity

Each child learns new vocabulary at their own pace. Initially, 10–15 new words per week is sufficient, gradually increasing the amount. Specialists emphasize the importance of not rushing the process, maintaining curiosity, and avoiding rote memorization. An integrated approach, as offered by "IH Rīga-Satva", helps not only expand vocabulary but also overcome the language barrier and start speaking fluently.
