Wired journalists tested several battery-powered pool cleaning robots and named the Beatbot AquaSense 2 Ultra as the best overall.

Battery-powered robots are becoming the new standard for pool cleaning, as they do not require a pump or long hoses like older pressure-side models. One of the top models is the Beatbot AquaSense 2 Ultra, offering near-perfect cleaning of floors, walls, and waterline, as well as surface skimming. Its six-hour battery life, AI-powered debris detection, and wireless charging make it convenient, although the 29-pound robot is somewhat unwieldy and costs around $3,000.

For those needing longer runtime, the iGarden M1-AI 90 features a 12,500 mAh battery allowing up to nine hours of floor-only cleaning. The robot's cameras use AI to actively search for debris. This robot can be left in the pool for weeks.

The Beatbot AquaSense 2 is a base model under $1,000 that still provides three cleaning modes and wireless charging. The Dreame Z1 Pro at $499 is a good budget option with unique pool mapping and magnetic charging.

The Beatbot AquaSense 2 Pro adds clarifying solution dispensing and surface cleaning mode, plus a larger battery. The Beatbot iSkim Ultra is a separate surface skimmer with front sensors to avoid collisions, though it has a minor design flaw with the basket release button.

Other tested models include Beatbot Sora 10, Sora 30, Bublue Vortex V5, and Mammotion Spino E1. The Beatbot AquaSense X is the first self-cleaning pool robot with a 42-pound AstroRinse base station, but it may collect standing water attracting mosquitoes.
