Experts: Root of the problem is humans – how to treat bears increasingly seen in Latvia
As bear sightings increase in Latvia, experts urge calm: the animals themselves are not dangerous, but situations where bears become dependent on human feeding are.

Bears in Latvia – are they really dangerous?
In a recent broadcast of Latvian Radio's program "Zināmais nezināmajā" (Known in the Unknown), experts shared their views on the growing number of bear observations in Latvia. Specialists emphasize that a bear wandering into a town does not make it a dangerous animal. It is simply a dangerous situation.
A human-caused problem
A completely different scenario involves bears that become dependent on humans, especially when they are deliberately fed. Such human behavior encourages the animals to become accustomed to people and develop potentially dangerous habits. Experts note that this is an issue that needs to be addressed, but overall there is no reason to escalate emotions or fears.
Recommendations for the public
To avoid hazardous situations, residents are advised not to feed bears and to avoid encouraging their habituation to human presence. Wildlife must retain natural foraging instincts, and human interference can disrupt that.
