Expert: Russia cannot suddenly launch a new conventional war
Military expert Mārtiņš Vērdiņš said on the program "Šodienas jautājums" that Russia could not unexpectedly start a new conventional war, since the necessary preparations would take several weeks and would be noticeable.
Speaking on Latvian Television's program "Šodienas jautājums," military expert Mārtiņš Vērdiņš explained that Russia could not suddenly, overnight, launch a new large-scale conventional war.
According to the expert, military action of this scale would require serious, time-consuming preparation that would take several weeks. Vērdiņš stressed that this preparation process could not be hidden — it would be observable and noticeable in advance.
Preparations would be visible
The expert's assessment implies that a sudden, unexpected attack by Russia in the form of a conventional war is not a realistic scenario at present. The necessary preparatory steps — such as troop and equipment movements — would become apparent before any potential attack, allowing time for them to be identified.
Vērdiņš's remarks came during a program that discusses current security and military topics, issues that are also relevant to Latvia as a NATO member state in a region where the military situation is closely monitored. The expert based his assessment on the idea that modern intelligence and surveillance capabilities would allow early detection of any signs pointing to preparations for a large-scale conventional war.
