In an interview with France 24's Sharon Gaffney, Peter Zalmayev, director of the Eurasia Democracy Initiative, shared his assessment of the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.

Zalmayev rejected narratives suggesting that Russia is only now 'taking the gloves off' in its fight against Ukraine. He argued that Moscow has consistently pursued maximalist objectives while adapting its tactics to the realities of the battlefield.

Ukrainian innovation, particularly in drone warfare, has complicated Russia's military superiority. However, Zalmayev contends that technological ingenuity cannot permanently compensate for disparities in manpower, industrial capacity, and external military support.

According to the analyst, the conflict has entered an 'escalatory spiral of attrition,' where both sides continually raise the stakes, but resource constraints become increasingly decisive.
