Explosion in Monaco: Three injured, suspect on the run
An explosion rocked a residential building in Monaco on Monday evening, injuring three people, two of them critically. The blast occurred shortly before 21:00 local time (19:00 GMT) on Rue Révérend Père Louis Frolla, near the border with France.
According to Monaco's Minister of State Christophe Mirmand, the explosion was caused by an explosive device left in a bag outside the building. The device appeared to contain bolts and pellets. Mirmand told AFP it was "very likely an attack," and police have launched an investigation.
Security camera footage showed a suspect fleeing towards France after the explosion, the Monaco government said. Over 100 police and emergency personnel were deployed to the scene.
Two of the victims suffered life-threatening injuries, Mirmand said, without disclosing their identities. All three injured were taken to a hospital in the nearby French city of Nice.
Prince Albert II of Monaco described the incident as a "heinous crime" and "a shock to the entire Monaco community." He stated that all relevant state services are being mobilized in cooperation with French authorities.
Mirmand noted that this is the first such act in the principality's history. Officials are expected to provide an update on Tuesday.
