EV Batteries Last Much Longer Than Initially Predicted
Real-world data shows that modern EV batteries degrade slowly, retaining up to 95% of range after five years, with only 0.3% needing replacement for newer models.

For years, battery longevity was a top concern for potential EV buyers, but real-world data now suggests those fears are overblown. Modern electric vehicle batteries are outperforming early forecasts, according to recent studies.
A 2025 study by Recurrent, a data science company, found that only 0.3% of EVs built from 2022 onward required battery replacement. In contrast, between 2011 and 2016, about 8.5% of EVs needed new batteries. On average, modern batteries degrade at 2.3% per year, meaning they could last 20 years or more, based on data from Geotab, which analyzed over 22,700 EVs.
Several factors explain the improved longevity. Viet Nguyen-Tien, a research officer at the London School of Economics, told The Wall Street Journal that better chemical composition, smarter battery management systems, and more effective thermal regulation have all contributed. Additionally, battery prices have fallen more than 90% since 2010, according to BloombergNEF.
Lab tests often underestimate battery life. Stanford University's SLAC-Stanford Battery Center tested 92 commercial lithium-ion batteries under real-world driving conditions—including stop-and-go traffic, rapid acceleration, and regenerative braking. The results showed a 38% increase in lifespan compared to standard constant-current discharge tests.
To maximize battery health, Geotab advises avoiding frequent high-power DC fast charging above 100 kW, which doubles degradation rates to about 3% per year. Keeping the battery charge between 20% and 80% during regular use also reduces long-term wear.
The gap between early EV battery fears and current reality is vast and growing, strengthening the case for EV ownership as degradation rates fall and replacement costs decrease.
