Elon Musk says Grok Imagine will make 'historically accurate' AI adaptation of Homer's Odyssey

Elon Musk has stated that his artificial intelligence platform Grok Imagine will create a full-length film adaptation of Homer's Odyssey before the end of this year, claiming it will be “historically accurate and true to the art of Homer.” In a post on X, Musk linked to a three-minute clip that a user said was generated by Grok Imagine, showing a scene between Odysseus and the nymph Calypso.

Musk has been actively criticizing Christopher Nolan's film “The Odyssey,” which was released last Friday to near-universal acclaim and strong box office numbers. Before the film's release, Musk reposted abusive messages targeting Nolan's casting of Black actress Lupita Nyong'o as Helen of Troy and Clytemnestra, and trans actor Elliot Page as Sinon, adding that Nolan “wants the awards” and “has lost his integrity.”

However, the criticism appears to have had little impact. Nolan's “The Odyssey” earned $264 million globally in its opening weekend and holds a 97% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes. In May, Nyong'o responded to right-wing critics, stating, “Our cast is representative of the world. I’m not spending my time thinking of a defense.” Nolan recently said the backlash “comes with the territory,” adding that “these conversations that happen before people see the film – they’re always irrelevant, because no one having them knows what the film actually is yet.”

The director was also dismissive of AI's role in filmmaking, calling the idea that it could replace human creativity “a nonsense.” He noted, “I’ve never seen a technology that’s been so successfully adopted by Wall Street and by investors and by tech companies that the public has so thoroughly rejected.”
