Elza Tomase reaches doubles final at W-50 tournament in Spain

Latvian tennis player Elza Tomase, partnering with American Carson Tengailis, has reached the doubles final of the ITF W-50 tournament being held on hard courts in Jecla, Spain.

In the semifinal, the Latvian-American pair defeated the international duo of Carmen Gallardo Gevara (Spain) and Kennedy Gibbs (USA) 6-1, 6-4. The run to the final earned Tomase 33 world ranking points.

Path to the final

In the first round of the doubles event, Tomase and Tengailis beat the tournament's top-seeded pair — Emily Appleton of Britain and Laura Hietaranta of Finland — 6-3, 7-5. In the quarterfinal, the Latvian-American duo defeated Canada's Kadence Brace and Alexandra Vagramov 6-3, 4-6, 10-1.

In the final, Tomase and Tengailis will meet Spain's Georgina Garcia Perez and Serbia's Elena Milovanovic, the tournament's second seeds.

Singles run ended earlier

In singles competition, Tomase, ranked 751st in the world, lost in the round of 16 to seventh-seeded Russian player Kira Pavlova (WTA 347) 1-6, 2-6. In the first round, the Latvian defeated Hietaranta (WTA 503) 6-2, 6-1. Reaching the singles round of 16 earned Tomase six WTA ranking points.
