Elza Tomase reaches W15 semifinal in South Karelia

Elza Tomase has reached the semifinals at the W15 event in South Karelia, earning a $734 prize and six ranking points.

Latvian tennis player Elza Tomase has advanced to the semifinals of the W15 tournament in South Karelia, beating an Italian opponent. The 24-year-old started as the clear favourite, with bookmakers offering odds of 1.11 on her success. Her 23-year-old rival had previously been ranked 912th in the world.

Tomase had to battle in both sets. In the first set, she recovered from 0:2 to lead 5:2, while in the second set she came back from 2:4. Her superiority was reflected in the statistics: she converted six of seven break points, compared to four of eight for the Italian, and won 61 total points to 46. The Latvian recorded one ace and two double faults, while her opponent did not manage an ace and made five double faults. The match lasted one hour and 38 minutes.

As a semifinalist, Tomase earns a prize of approximately $734 and six ranking points. In the next round she will face either Greek player Valentini Gramatikopoulou, ranked 557th, or Estonian Mailene Nuudi, ranked 1143rd.
