Amy Hunt claims second gold at European Championships with 200m victory

Britain's Amy Hunt secured her second gold medal of the European Championships in Birmingham, winning the 200m final in a season's best time of 22.19 seconds.

The 24-year-old overtook training partner and rival Dina Asher-Smith in the closing stages of the race, with Asher-Smith - who had led early after a fast start - unable to hold on and finishing third. Ireland's Rhasidat Adeleke claimed silver with a national record time, edging out Asher-Smith for second place.

Hunt, who had already won the 100m title on Monday, matched Asher-Smith's own 100m-200m sprint double from the 2018 European Championships. Speaking after the race, Hunt said the week had already become one she would remember for the rest of her life.

With the women's and mixed 4x100m relay finals still to come, Hunt remains on course to become the first athlete ever to win four gold medals at a single European Championships.

For Asher-Smith, the bronze marked her ninth European Championship medal, a career total surpassed only by former Polish sprinter Irena Szewinska's tally of ten. She described the achievement as meaningful given it comes a decade after her first European medal.

Before the race, British fans had hoped for a clean sweep of the podium, as Asher-Smith, Hunt and Success Eduan held the three fastest times in Europe this season. However, Eduan - who had beaten Hunt to the British title in June - finished sixth.

Hunt's win added to a strong showing for British sprinters in Birmingham, following a one-two finish for Romell Glave and Jeremiah Azu in the men's 100m and Matthew Hudson-Smith's victory in the 400m.
