Horror-comedy series "Widow's Bay" dominates the Emmy Awards
At the 78th Emmy Awards in Los Angeles, Apple TV's comedy series "Widow's Bay" won the most awards of the night — 14 — including Best Comedy Series, while "Pittsburgh Hospital" was named Best Drama Series for the second year running.
The 78th annual Emmy Awards ceremony took place in Los Angeles, with the horror-tinged comedy series "Widow's Bay" from Apple TV taking home the most statuettes of the night — 14. The show is set in a small fictional town on an island in New England, where a newly elected mayor, played by Cardiff-born actor Matthew Rhys, tries to attract more tourists even as locals remain convinced the town is cursed.
"Widow's Bay" won the Emmy for Best Comedy Series and swept nearly every comedy category except Best Lead Actress. In doing so, it broke the record for most awards won by a comedy series in a single season, previously set a year earlier by Seth Rogen's "The Studio," which received 13 statuettes.
Matthew Rhys won Best Lead Actor in a Comedy Series, Stephen Root took Best Supporting Actor, and Kate O'Flynn won Best Supporting Actress. Rhys also picked up a second Emmy the same evening, for Best Actor in a Limited Series for his role in the thriller "The Beast in Me" — making him the first actor in the ceremony's history to win two acting categories in a single night.
As in the previous year, the Emmy for Best Drama Series went to "Pittsburgh Hospital," whose lead actor, Noah Wyle, won Best Lead Actor in a Drama Series.
American actress Rae Seehorn won Best Lead Actress in a Drama Series for "One of Many," while Allison Janney received Best Supporting Actress for her role in "The Diplomat." The tragic story of a middle-aged love triangle, "GCS: St. Louis," was honored as Best Limited Series.
