Andy Burnham Vows Unwavering UK Support for Ukraine as He Poised to Become Prime Minister
Incoming UK Prime Minister Andy Burnham has outlined his foreign policy priorities, pledging to maintain support for Ukraine and strengthen national security.

Andy Burnham, widely expected to become the next British prime minister this month, has laid out his foreign policy vision in a column for The Times. He promised to continue the current level of support for Ukraine in its war against Russia.
Burnham stated that his priorities as head of government will be enhancing national security, strengthening existing alliances, deepening cooperation with Europe, and supporting Ukraine. He emphasized that Britain faces an increasingly dangerous world, citing "growing Russian aggression, conflict in the Middle East, climate and energy instability, and technologies that are rapidly changing the nature of war and our security at home."
In this context, Burnham pledged to continue his predecessor's course of increasing defense spending, reinforcing Britain's role in NATO, and working closely with European partners. He noted that the United States will remain Britain's most important ally in defense and security.
"Britain's support for Ukraine will not waver. We know that British security and broader Euro-Atlantic security are inseparable from what is happening in Ukraine," Burnham wrote.
He recalled that under Keir Starmer's government, Britain showed leadership by creating and co-chairing the "coalition of the willing" to support the "brave Ukrainian people." Burnham also mentioned his time as mayor of Greater Manchester, where he supported the mayors of Kyiv and Lviv, and promised to continue backing the Ukrainian people against Russian aggression.
Burnham is expected to become the Labour Party leader next Friday if no other candidates emerge, and then assume the post of prime minister on Monday, July 20. This follows Prime Minister Keir Starmer's announcement on June 22 that his time in office had come to an end.
