Enric Mas claims first career overall victory at Vuelta a España
Spaniard Enric Mas secured his first-ever overall win at the Vuelta a España as the race concluded with its 21st stage, won in a sprint finish by Norway's Tobias Johannessen. No Latvian cyclists competed in this year's race.
The 81st edition of Spain's Vuelta a España concluded on Sunday with its 21st stage, covering 112 kilometers. The stage sprint finish was won by Norwegian rider Tobias Johannessen of Uno-X Mobility, followed by Italy's Alessandro Romele (XDS Astana) and Belgium's Ramses Debruyne (Alpecin-Premier Tech) in second and third. The leading group completed the distance in two hours, 54 minutes and eight seconds.
Overall race leader Enric Mas of Movistar finished the final stage in 109th place, but this did not affect his overall lead. The Spaniard had taken over the race leadership after Slovenian rider Tadej Pogačar's crash and held onto it through the finish in Granada.
Final standings
Mas finished two minutes and 15 seconds ahead of Slovenia's Primož Roglič (Red Bull - Bora - hansgrohe) in the general classification. Austria's Felix Gall (Decathlon CMA CGM) took third, trailing the winner by two minutes and 44 seconds.
This marks Mas's first overall Vuelta a España victory; he had previously finished second three times and third once.
About the race
This year's Vuelta a España was scheduled to cover 3,310.6 kilometers across 21 stages, but the 174-kilometer third stage was cancelled due to poor weather conditions. Last year's winner was Denmark's Jonas Vingegaard. No Latvian cyclists took part in this year's race.
