Last weekend, the US Department of Justice released a new series of documents related to the case of convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein. The document set contains over three million pages, with Latvia and Riga mentioned 1,500 times. Among these references, besides names of Latvian models and agencies, a cultural treasure also appears – the title of a legendary novel by a Latvian writer.
In correspondence, Epstein asked his interlocutor: "What is your favorite book and movie? What else do you like to do in Florida besides lounging in the sun?" The novel's title appeared in this context. This fact has sparked interest in Latvia and abroad, as Epstein case documents have so far been mainly associated with sexual exploitation and elite circles.
The release of documents is part of a broader investigation that continues after Epstein's death in prison in 2019. Latvian authorities have not yet commented on this finding.
