Organ Festival 'Latvia – Land of Organs' Celebrates 10th Anniversary, Calls for Restoration of Historic Instruments
The historic organ festival 'Latvia – Land of Organs' is taking place for the 10th time, with concerts in various churches until September 25. The festival aims to raise awareness about the value of organs and the need for their restoration.
The 10th anniversary of the historic organ festival 'Latvia – Land of Organs' is being celebrated with concerts in Latvian churches until September 25. Ilona Birģele, organist and artistic director of the festival, emphasized in Latvian Radio's 'Kultūras rondo' program that the goal is to allow the public to see, get to know, and hear these instruments more beautifully and diversely, so that people realize what treasures are located in their places of worship.
Organ restorer Alvis Melbārdis spoke about conditions that adversely affect the sound of organs and revealed which instruments included in this year's festival program surprised him. He pointed out that many historic instruments are in poor condition and need restoration to preserve their unique sound for future generations. Thus, the festival not only delights with music but also encourages care for cultural heritage.
