Earps hopes for WSL return against former club Manchester United

Goalkeeper Mary Earps, who joined London City Lionesses this summer, could make her debut for the club on Friday at 19:00 BST — potentially against her former team Manchester United, where she spent five seasons and became England's number-one goalkeeper.

Earps made more than 100 appearances for United, helped the club win its first major trophy in 2024, and was twice named Fifa's goalkeeper of the year. She also played a key role in England's Euro 2022 triumph and their run to the 2023 World Cup final while at United, earning her the BBC Sports Personality of the Year award in 2023.

After leaving United, Earps spent two years at Paris St-Germain, making 22 league appearances last season. She said the move to France allowed her to step back from intense media attention in England, which grew after her book sparked controversy when it was released last November. Even so, when she faced United while playing for PSG, she received a warm reception, and a mural of her still stands outside Old Trafford.

Earps said her time abroad was valuable, but she missed the atmosphere of English football and is glad to be back home. London City has brought in several high-profile signings this summer, including two-time Ballon d'Or winner Alexia Putellas and Spain defender Mapi Leon.

Earps has signed a two-year deal with the club but will have to compete for the starting spot with goalkeeper Elene Lete, who impressed last season. Having announced her international retirement in 2025, Earps intends to continue playing at club level and hopes to contribute to London City's ambitions of becoming one of the league's top sides.
