EU's 21st Sanctions Package Targets Ozon, Yandex, and Wildberries Banks
The European Union has published its 21st sanctions package, the largest batch of individual listings in four years. The measures target 48 individuals and 170 entities, including multiple Russian banks and oil refineries.
The European Union's 21st sanctions package, published in the bloc's Official Journal, includes 48 individuals and 170 entities. Among those sanctioned are Russian Sports Minister and head of the Olympic Committee Mikhail Degtyarev, presidential aide and Ukraine peace talks negotiator Vladimir Medinsky, Gazprom-Media CEO and former Roskomnadzor head Alexander Zharov, International Chess Federation (FIDE) president Arkady Dvorkovich, ANO Dialog director Vladimir Tabak, Russian Railways CEO Oleg Belozerov, and Safmar group founder Mikhail Gutseriev.
The EU justified sanctions against Degtyarev citing his pledge to help rehabilitate Russian soldiers through sports and his self-description as a "soldier of Putin." Medinsky was sanctioned for his role in state propaganda, including writing textbooks that portray Ukraine as part of the "Russian world."
Of the 170 entities, over half (94) are banks, including DOM.RF, Ak Bars, Uralsib, MTS Bank, Tochka, Ozon Bank, Yandex Bank, Wildberries Bank, Pochta Bank, and Rosselkhozbank. The Moscow Exchange was also sanctioned.
Additionally, the EU imposed restrictions on several oil refineries, such as the Kuibyshev, Novokuibyshev, Anzhersky, and Severny Kuzbass refineries.
The Council of the European Union described the package as "the largest batch of individual listings of the last four years."
