EU discusses new Russia sanctions package covering around 1,600 candidates

The European Union is discussing details of a new sanctions package against Russia that could affect around 1,600 individuals and legal entities. Politico reported this citing its own sources, according to "European Pravda."
Three European diplomats say the new sanctions package will be discussed at a meeting of the EU Foreign Affairs Council taking place Tuesday and Wednesday next week in Ireland. According to one diplomat, the list of "candidates" includes about 1,600 subjects — 800 individuals and 800 legal entities. The package is expected to be adopted in mid-October.
Frozen assets back on the table
Another source said the use of frozen Russian assets is again under discussion, though this once more requires persuading Belgium, which remains concerned about potential legal consequences. All three diplomats say the overall goal is a significant expansion of existing sanctions.
As previously reported, Ukraine's Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha will also attend the meeting of EU member states' foreign ministers. Earlier, the Financial Times reported that Sweden, the Netherlands, Spain and Poland had prepared a letter to the European Commission calling for renewed work on a mechanism to use frozen Russian sovereign assets to finance Ukraine.
