EU tariff cuts number of cheap parcels by 30-40%
French customs data show the number of cheap parcels entering the EU fell 30-40% in the first month after new tariffs took effect. France's government sees this as a sign that proper regulation can change the behavior of major Chinese trading platforms.
Data from the first month of new European Union tariffs on cheap parcels show a marked drop in their numbers. Euronews reported the figures, citing French customs data, with the information relayed by "European Pravda".
According to data presented on Thursday by France's Ministry of Economy, the number of cheap parcels entering the EU from third countries has fallen by 30-40% since the new tariffs took effect. The French government views this as a signal that proper regulation can alter the behavior of major Chinese trading platforms.
New tariffs
As a reminder, starting July 1, a EU tariff of 3 euros took effect on parcels valued up to 150 euros, which previously were not subject to import duty. The 3-euro rate is a transitional measure agreed by EU member states to combat the influx of cheap and not always safe goods from China.
From July 2028, the EU Customs Data Hub will begin operating, applying standard customs duties based on a product's tariff classification, origin, and value, in line with the EU's standard customs rules.
Meanwhile, Italy plans to impose its own national levy on such parcels in addition to the EU tariff.
