EU Commissioner Kos: Ukraine Must Become EU Member, Negotiations Lack Assessment of Bravery
EU Commissioner Marta Kos stated that Ukraine must join the EU, noting that current methodology does not evaluate Ukraine's contributions to European security.

European Commissioner for Enlargement Marta Kos has declared that Ukraine must become a member of the European Union. Speaking at the "Ukrainian Lunch" in Gdansk ahead of URC-2026, she noted that the current EU negotiation methodology does not include chapters that assess the key results and advantages Ukraine provides to the Union.
Kos recalled the intergovernmental conference on June 15, where the EU opened the first negotiating cluster for Ukraine. She remarked that people cried during the opening, and Hungarian Foreign Minister Anita Orbán expressed support for Ukraine.
The commissioner emphasized that the EU understands the benefits of Ukraine's membership go beyond traditional areas of cooperation. "We do not have a negotiation chapter for bravery or resilience to evaluate what Ukrainians do for Europe... We cannot be safe except when Ukraine becomes a member," Kos said.
In response, Ukrainian Deputy Prime Minister Taras Kachka urged the EU to take action. "Indeed, there is no chapter on bravery in the negotiations, but you can at least open clusters," he stated.
Currently, Hungary is blocking the opening of remaining negotiating clusters for Ukraine and Moldova. It is known that on June 26, the EU will attempt to persuade Hungary not to block a letter regarding the opening of clusters.
