The European Commission's leadership is maintaining a firm position on fully ending Russian gas imports across the European Union, setting the end of 2027 as the deadline for reducing imports to zero.

The push comes even as the EU is currently facing an energy crisis, which adds pressure on member states and energy markets. Despite these difficult conditions, the Commission's leadership has not backed away from the previously set timeline and continues to stress the need for a complete break from Russian energy resources.

The plan forms part of broader EU efforts to reduce dependence on Russian energy, which has been treated as a strategic priority since Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine. Ending gas imports is viewed as one of the tools to limit Russia's ability to fund its military activities.

The situation remains complex, as Europe's energy market continues to be sensitive to supply fluctuations, and several member states have voiced concerns about the pace of the transition. Nonetheless, the Commission's stance indicates that the end-of-2027 deadline is being treated as fixed, aimed at keeping pressure on Russia and strengthening the EU's energy security.
