The European Union is seeking allies to help finance Ukraine as American support for Kyiv grows increasingly uncertain. The EU's institutions in Brussels want to persuade Canada, Britain and Japan to share the costs. The total amount at stake is €70 billion.

The issue was discussed by journalists Zoya Sheftalovich and Kathryn Carlson in the latest episode of Politico Europe's "Brussels Playbook" podcast. They also considered whether closer trade and defense ties could be part of the bargain with these countries. Politico has also published an article titled "EU to press Canada and UK for more Ukraine funding," indicating that Canada and Britain are among the countries from which the EU hopes to secure a bigger contribution.

The episode also covered two other issues. Alice Weidel, leader of Germany's far-right party Alternative für Deutschland (AfD), came to Strasbourg, where the European Parliament sits, to present her vision for a radically different European Union. A Politico article describes it as a plan to downsize the EU.

The second topic was who owns a person's face and voice in the age of artificial intelligence. As deepfakes become more and more convincing, members of the European Parliament are pushing for new protections. The Socialists are calling for an EU law on deepfakes.
