EU weighs joint gas purchases, telework calls and record oil reserve release amid energy crisis
The European Union has rolled out several measures in recent months to address its energy crisis, ranging from collective gas purchasing to the largest coordinated release of oil reserves in history.

At the same time, the EU's energy commissioner has urged member states to take both short-term and long-term measures to ease the crisis and strengthen Europe's energy independence. Among the steps suggested were calls for citizens to work remotely more often and drive less, in order to cut energy consumption.
Additional pressure on energy markets has come from the conflict in Iran, which triggered the largest release of global oil reserves in history. The International Energy Agency explained the move by citing fears that the US-led conflict could spark a deep global energy crisis.
Grid dispute
Meanwhile, discussions continue over the modernization of Europe's power grids. France and Sweden are opposing a revenue-sharing mechanism proposed by the European Commission that would redistribute income between countries to ease grid bottlenecks. The largest electricity-exporting countries have pushed back against the plan, as it would mean losing revenue for them.
Taken together, these developments reflect the EU's attempt to address both immediate supply problems and long-term energy independence goals, complicated by geopolitical tensions and diverging interests among member states.
