Asylum applications plummet across EU as governments push for deportation hubs

Asylum applications are falling sharply across the European Union, while an increasing number of member states are pushing for the creation of so-called deportation hubs. EU Migration Commissioner Magnus Brunner said the bloc's new migration policy is delivering results.

A sharp drop in asylum claims

The European Union is seeing a marked decline in the number of asylum applications being filed. The trend coincides with intensified efforts by member states to tighten control over migration flows and rethink how asylum cases are handled.

Push for deportation hubs

At the same time, several EU governments are increasingly advocating for the establishment of so-called deportation, or return, hubs — facilities located outside the bloc's territory to which people whose asylum claims have been rejected, or who have no legal right to remain, could be sent. The approach is being framed as part of a broader shift in policy aimed at reducing irregular migration and speeding up the return of people with no grounds to stay in the EU.

Commissioner's assessment

EU Migration Commissioner Magnus Brunner described the situation in positive terms, stating that Europe's new migration policy is delivering results. His comment suggests the European Commission views the falling number of asylum applications as evidence that recently implemented policy measures are working as intended.

Context

Debate over deportation hubs and stricter migration policy has intensified across the EU in recent years, as member states search for ways to address migration pressure and public concern over uncontrolled arrivals. Brunner's remarks indicate that Brussels regards this direction as part of a longer-term strategy on migration.
