According to the Health Department, as of last week, Estonia has recorded 15 cases of tick-borne encephalitis and 460 cases of Lyme disease this year. Chief specialist Maria Vikentieva noted that these numbers are relatively standard for the beginning of the season, but as people spend more time outdoors, the number of infections is likely to increase.

Specialists advise against visiting emergency departments after every tick bite. Removing a tick does not require surgical intervention and can be done at home.

Vaccination significantly reduces the risk of infection. The interval between revaccinations has been extended from five to ten years, but only if the full vaccination course was completed. Family doctor Elizaveta Kaledina explained that studies have shown antibody levels do not decrease for five years and remain sufficient for up to ten years, justifying the extended interval.

For those who missed vaccination before the summer season, the doctor still recommends getting vaccinated during summer. Ticks become active at very low temperatures, so vaccination remains relevant throughout the year.
