Evenepoel wins fourth straight world title in time trial

The men's individual time trial at the road cycling world championships in Montreal was held on Sunday over a 39.2-kilometer course featuring a small climb near the finish. Belgian rider Remco Evenepoel completed the distance at an average speed of 52.4 km/h, finishing in 44 minutes and 53.13 seconds to secure his fourth consecutive world title in the discipline.

Italy's Filippo Ganna, himself a two-time former champion in this event, took second place, finishing 57.31 seconds behind the winner. French rider Paul Seixas rounded out the podium in third among a field of 60 riders, trailing Evenepoel by one minute and 13.04 seconds. No Latvian athletes competed in the event.

This marks Evenepoel's sixth medal in the individual time trial overall. He first reached the podium in 2019, taking silver. His 2020 season ended early due to a crash, and he took bronze in the following two seasons before beginning his current run of four straight victories.

Women's race also decided

In the women's event on the same course, Switzerland's Marlen Reusser took the title with an average speed of 46.66 km/h, finishing in 50 minutes and 24.44 seconds. Britain's Joss Lowden placed second, 40.11 seconds behind, while Germany's Franziska Koch finished third, 45.54 seconds off the pace.

This is Reusser's second consecutive world title in the discipline. She previously finished second in 2020 and 2021, and third in 2022.

The road cycling world championships in Montreal continue through next Sunday.
