A Romanian Air Force F-16 fighter jet shot down an unmanned aerial vehicle that illegally crossed the national border on Thursday, July 24. President Nicușor Dan announced on social media platform X that the incident took place at approximately 11:00 AM.

According to the president, the drone crashed in an uninhabited area, allowing the pilot to open fire without endangering civilians. "Teams of experts from the relevant agencies are currently surveying the area to establish all the circumstances of the incident," Dan added.

This is not the first time drones linked to the war in Ukraine have reached Romanian territory. During a Russian attack on Ukraine on the night of May 28-29, a drone crashed into a 10-story residential building in the Romanian city of Galați. Two people were taken to hospital and 70 residents were evacuated. The drone was identified as a Russian Geran-2 type loitering munition.
