Fact-check project to examine whether Latvia faces a pellet shortage

Although there is still plenty of time before winter and the upcoming heating season, social media has been buzzing with discussions about buying wood pellets. Some posts claim that pellet prices have jumped to as much as 400 euros per tonne, while delivery queues are so long that the product may only arrive after the New Year.
Such claims affect approximately 40,000 households in Latvia that use pellets for heating. Social media users are asking whether this is the last moment to buy fuel to avoid freezing in winter.
The fact-checking project Faktomāts, run by TVNET GROUP, has started looking into whether the situation is really as dramatic as described. The project is set to verify whether the reported price increase and delivery delays are accurate, and whether households should rush to purchase pellets immediately.
So far, Faktomāts has not published any final conclusions. The project has only just begun its work to establish whether the threat of a pellet shortage is real.
