Barcelona Women thrash AS Roma 6-0 in Champions League

Dominant win in Rome

On Wednesday, 30 September, FC Barcelona Femení claimed a commanding 6-0 away victory over AS Roma at the Stadio Tre Fontane in Rome, in the second matchday of the UEFA Women's Champions League league phase. It was their second straight win in the competition, following a 5-2 victory over Paris FC in the opening round.

Norwegian winger Caroline Graham Hansen scored twice (19th and 60th minutes), Claudia Pina also netted a brace (54th and 75th minutes), and Ewa Pajor added a further goal in the 85th minute. Roma defender Shukurat Oladipo turned the ball into her own net in the 39th minute.

Dominance across the pitch

According to statistics compiled by the BBC, Barcelona controlled the game throughout, holding 74.8% of possession compared to Roma's 25.2%. The Catalans registered 20 shots, 11 of them on target, while Roma managed just four shots, none on target. Barcelona also outpassed their hosts, completing 882 passes at 90.4% accuracy compared to Roma's 289 passes at 73.4% accuracy.

Returning players and youth involvement

As reported by FC Barcelona's official website, Aitana Bonmatí featured for roughly half an hour, while Ines Van Asten returned from injury and even set up the final goal. Three U-20 world champions - Aïcha, Carla Julià and Rosalía - also got minutes on the pitch. Barcelona defender Irene Paredes received a yellow card during the match.

Context

Barcelona had already won all three previous meetings with Roma, scoring ten goals and conceding only one. Roma, meanwhile, had been held to a goalless draw by Oud-Heverlee Leuven in their previous match and had won just two of their last 11 Champions League fixtures. Following this result, according to OneFootball, Barcelona moved top of the table with a goal difference of +9, ahead of Arsenal's +1, even though both sides remain level on six points. The win came just days before Barcelona's Liga F Clásico fixture at the Spotify Camp Nou.
