Latvian decathlete Feldmanis fails to register a result in long jump at World U20 Championships
At the World U20 Athletics Championships in Oregon, Latvian juniors Kārlis Feldmanis and Ernests Lešinskis are competing in the decathlon, but Feldmanis failed to record a valid attempt in the long jump.
Two Latvian junior team athletes, Kārlis Feldmanis from Talsi and Ernests Lešinskis, who trains in Sigulda, Vecumnieki and Murjāņi, have begun the decathlon at the World U20 Athletics Championships taking place in Oregon, USA.
Both Latvians competed in the fastest heat of the 100 metres. Lešinskis clocked 11.08 seconds, finishing seventh in his heat, while Feldmanis ran 11.21 seconds for ninth place. Among all 34 competitors, this placed them 21st and 26th overall. Both athletes finished slightly slower than their personal bests — Lešinskis by 10 hundredths of a second and Feldmanis by 12 hundredths.
Long jump setback
The second event, the long jump, did not go well for Feldmanis. The athlete, whose personal best stands at 6.97 metres, failed to register a valid mark in any of his three attempts, leaving him without a result in the discipline. Notably, in June Feldmanis set a big personal best of 7458 points in the decathlon at the Latvian championships.
Lešinskis also struggled in the long jump, managing 6.44 metres — 59 centimetres short of his personal best — which placed him 29th among the competitors.
After two events, Lešinskis sits 26th overall with 1527 points. The competition continues with shot put, followed in the next session by high jump and the 400 metres.
Other Latvian athletes are also competing at the championships in various disciplines, including triple jump, heptathlon, discus and hammer throw, as well as hurdles events.
