Fenerbahce coach announces shock resignation after Roma draw, president refuses to accept it

Fenerbahce head coach Ismail Kartal stunned the club by announcing his resignation just minutes after Wednesday's 1-1 Champions League draw with Roma. The 65-year-old made the announcement during his post-match news conference, stating he intends never to return to the club.

Kartal had returned for a fourth spell in charge of Fenerbahce in June 2026, coinciding with the club's first Champions League campaign in 18 years. At the time of his announcement, the team sat ninth in the Turkish Super Lig with two wins and two defeats, having played just one match in the Champions League.

In his remarks, Kartal thanked the players and club president for what he called a productive period, saying the decision to step down was made to benefit the club's future and was reached together with the team.

President insists coach stays

Club president Aziz Yildirim quickly rejected the resignation, stating in an official club release that Kartal remains head coach and calling on fans and media to support him. Yildirim said he had since spoken with Kartal directly, who cited the pressure of the job and an incident during the match in which he was struck by a bottle thrown from the stands.

Fenerbahce confirmed on social media that the supporter responsible for throwing the bottle has been identified and banned from the stadium. Yildirim criticised the atmosphere created by fans and media criticism, urging the club's community to show greater respect toward the coach.

The news blindsided Fenerbahce's squad. English defender Archie Brown, whose second-half equaliser cancelled out Roma's opener, appeared unaware of the resignation when asked about it in his own post-match interview.

Kartal previously won the Turkish Super Cup with Fenerbahce in 2014 and, as a player, claimed six trophies with the club, including two league titles.
