Fernandez booed by Chelsea fans as Alonso previews new-look system in win over Real Sociedad
Chelsea beat Real Sociedad 3-1 in a pre-season friendly, but attention centred on a mixed fan reaction to Enzo Fernandez, who came on shortly after the club's transfer deadline passed. Manager Xabi Alonso also gave a look at his likely formation for the new season.

Chelsea defeated Real Sociedad 3-1 at Stamford Bridge in a pre-season friendly overshadowed by a divided reaction from supporters toward midfielder Enzo Fernandez.
Fernandez was booed by sections of the crowd both when his name was announced before kick-off and again when he entered the match in the 62nd minute, less than a day after Chelsea's self-imposed transfer deadline had passed. The Argentine had wanted to join Real Madrid earlier in the summer, but the Spanish club withdrew its interest. Manchester City later held talks with his representatives, but no club met Chelsea's £120m valuation before Friday's deadline. Some fans nonetheless chanted his name in support, and when captain Reece James was substituted, he handed the armband to Fernandez as usual.
Rogers and Pedro impress
New signing Morgan Rogers, a club-record £117m arrival from Aston Villa, scored just seven minutes into his debut and quickly won over supporters with chants of his name. Having trained for less than a week following his return from holiday, he understandably faded before being replaced after 62 minutes.
Joao Pedro continued his standout pre-season form with two goals, taking his tally to eight in seven pre-season matches. Real Sociedad equalised shortly before half-time, but Chelsea took control after the break to seal the win.
Alonso trials his system
Taking charge at Stamford Bridge for the first time, manager Xabi Alonso fielded a 3-4-2-1 formation with Robert Sanchez in goal and a back three. Several players, including Nicolas Jackson, Liam Delap and Mykhailo Mudryk, were left out of the squad amid ongoing transfer interest from other clubs. Chelsea still have around 40 senior professionals under contract and must offload at least 15 players before the transfer window closes.
