FBI Director Kash Patel is planning to travel to Russia in October, according to a report by Politico citing a U.S. official and another source familiar with the plans. Politico reports that Patel could visit Russia on October 14–15. He initially plans to go to Moscow and then St. Petersburg, though the schedule may change.
It is expected that Patel will be hosted by Russia's Federal Security Service (FSB). It is not yet known whether the American official will meet with Russian President Vladimir Putin. The purpose of the visit also remains unclear.
The White House referred journalists' inquiries about the trip to the FBI. The FBI and the U.S. Department of Justice have not commented on the information.
According to Politico, the last time an FBI director visited Russia was in 2013, when then-director Robert Mueller traveled to Moscow. Mueller later led the investigation into possible Russian interference in the 2016 U.S. presidential election and alleged ties to Donald Trump's campaign.
