FIBA suspends Latvian basketball player Elvijs Frīdenbergs over betting violations
FIBA has suspended 24-year-old Latvian basketball player Elvijs Frīdenbergs for four months after he placed bets with a bookmaker and disclosed inside information. The ban runs until November 15 this year.
The International Basketball Federation (FIBA) has issued a suspension against Latvian basketball player Elvijs Frīdenbergs, the Latvian Basketball Union has announced.
FIBA found that the 24-year-old player violated fair play principles by placing sports bets with a bookmaker, disclosing inside information, and failing to report suspicious circumstances he had encountered.
Sanction details
The decision was issued on August 19 this year, imposing a four-month suspension on Frīdenbergs that will remain in effect until November 15. In addition, the player was fined 300 Swiss francs, equivalent to roughly 320 euros.
The suspension applies to participation in FIBA, national federation, or federation-recognized competitions, and the decision took effect immediately. Involved parties have the right to request a detailed justification of the ruling within ten days and may appeal it according to FIBA's established procedures.
The Latvian Basketball Union emphasized that adherence to fair play principles and the protection of competition results from outside influence is mandatory for everyone involved in the basketball community.
Playing career
Last season, Frīdenbergs played in the second-tier league championship for the club "Salaspils". Before that, he spent three seasons with the University of Latvia team and also played for "Turība".
