US-born 'Mushroom Mother' Larisa Mednis traces her roots to Latvia
Philadelphia-born second-generation Latvian-American Larisa Mednis combines singing in a Latvian choir and playing the kokle with a passion for foraging mushrooms, performing under the stage name 'Mother Mushroom'. She hopes to one day return to her ancestors' homeland.
Larisa Mednis, born in Philadelphia, is a second-generation Latvian-American whose life blends traditional Latvian culture with a deep love of nature. She sings in a local Latvian choir and plays the kokle, a traditional Latvian string instrument, keeping her family's heritage alive despite never having lived in Latvia herself.
A passion for foraging
In her free time, Mednis pursues what she describes as her favorite pastime: mushroom foraging. She has developed a keen ability to identify different mushroom species in the forest by their caps, a skill that has become central to her creative identity — she performs under the stage name "Mother Mushroom."
From hobby to art
Mushrooms inspire more than just her walks through the woods; they also fuel her songwriting, with several of her compositions drawing on the theme. She also experiments in the kitchen, brewing a liqueur made from chanterelles, a mushroom variety also commonly found in Latvia's forests.
Although Larisa Mednis has spent her entire life in the United States, she maintains a strong connection to her Latvian roots through culture, language and tradition. She has expressed hope that she will one day be able to visit or even relocate to Latvia, the homeland of her ancestors, to grow closer to the country her family came from.
