Finucane makes Games history with fourth track gold
Welsh cyclist Emma Finucane wins her fourth Commonwealth Games gold medal in Glasgow, becoming the first sprint cyclist to achieve this feat at a single Games.
Welsh star Emma Finucane has etched her name into the record books by becoming the first sprint cyclist to win four track gold medals at a single Commonwealth Games. The 23-year-old claimed victory in the keirin, adding to her previous golds in the team sprint, individual sprint, and the 1,000m time trial.
Olympic champion Ellesse Andrews finished second as she defended her Commonwealth keirin title. At the 2022 Games in Birmingham, New Zealand's Aaron Gate had won four golds—three on the track and one in the road race. Finucane achieved her quartet of successes across four consecutive days at the Chris Hoy Velodrome in Glasgow.
Australian legend Anna Meares and New Zealander Andrews had previously won three track titles, in 2010 and 2022 respectively. Finucane also becomes the first Welsh woman to collect four golds at a single Commonwealth Games, and she is now Wales' most successful female athlete in Games history, surpassing para-sprinter Olivia Breen, who had held the record for just two days.
Weightlifter David Morgan remains Wales' most successful Commonwealth Games athlete overall, with nine golds and three silvers. Finucane's latest victory brought Wales' 31st medal of the Games, comprising nine golds, ten silvers, and twelve bronzes.
