The Autonomous Key takes a different approach to screen-time management by introducing a physical NFC key that pairs with a companion app to lock distracting apps. Instead of relying on willpower to ignore notifications, users must physically scan the key with their phone to unlock access. Each unlock session lasts up to 60 minutes before the apps automatically lock again. The key is compact, about three inches long, and works with Android 8.0+ and iOS 15+.

Pricing and Competition

At just $9, the Autonomous Key is significantly cheaper than competitors like Blok ($29), Unpluq ($26.50), and Brick ($59). While Brick offers additional features like Sleep Mode and in-app purchase blocking, the Autonomous Key covers core functionality at a fraction of the price. One key can be paired with multiple phones, making it practical for families or multi-device users.

AI Insights with a Sassy Personality

The companion app provides AI-powered insights, tracking how often users unlock distracting apps, how long they remain accessible, and peak usage times. Notably, the AI summarizes habits with a deliberately sassy personality. For instance, if users immediately re-unlock apps after locking them, it might suggest the key wasn't placed far enough away.

Practical Considerations

During testing, the NFC scan occasionally required multiple attempts, making it less ideal for essential apps like messaging or email. If the key is lost, the current workaround is to uninstall and reinstall the companion app. The company is developing a backup unlock method for a future update. The Autonomous Key is currently in beta following a Kickstarter campaign and began shipping earlier this month. It is available in five colors: pink, orange, blue, gray, and brown.
