Former Spain international leaves FK Liepāja coaching job after less than a month

Latvian club FK Liepāja has announced that head coach Kurro Torres is leaving after less than a month in charge. The Spaniard used a clause in his contract allowing a buyout and is moving on to a new football club. The club thanked him and wished him success.

Torres took charge of Liepāja on August 29 and made an immediate impact, debuting just two days later with a 3:2 win over Riga. Three draws followed: a 0:0 at home against RFS, a comeback from 0:2 to 2:2 away at Ogre, and an important scoreless draw at home against direct rival Daugavpils in the race for fourth place.

A decorated playing career

As a player, Torres was a left-back who won two Spanish league titles and the UEFA Cup with Valencia, and earned five caps for the Spanish national team, where he competed for a starting spot with Carles Puyol. In 2024 he became Estonian champion with Tallinn's Levadia, and in the first half of 2026 he worked at Spanish third-tier club Real Murcia.

Third coaching change this season

Torres was already the third head coach at Liepāja this season. The club began the campaign under Swedish coach Andreas Alm, who departed in late May for personal reasons, leaving a record of 5-3-6 and an average of 1.29 points per game. Assistant coach Jānis Goba then took charge on an interim basis for two matches (1-1-0, averaging 2.00 points), before Estonian specialist Vladimirs Vasiļjevs took over in June, compiling a 5-0-6 record with an average of 1.36 points. Under Torres, the average was 1.50 points per game.

Liepāja have five matches left this season, all to be played at home. After the international break, they host Auda on October 12, followed by matches against Jelgava, Tukums 2000, Super Nova and Grobiņa. In the fight for fourth place, Liepāja lead Daugavpils by four points, though Daugavpils hold the advantage in head-to-head matchups.
