Flavio Bolsonaro, the right-wing candidate in Brazil's presidential election, announced on Wednesday that he has selected conservative lawmaker Alfredo Gaspar as his vice-presidential running mate. Gaspar is known for his tough stance on fighting crime.

Bolsonaro, a 45-year-old senator and son of former right-wing president Jair Bolsonaro, is expected to face current left-wing President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva in October's vote. Crime has become the central theme of Bolsonaro's campaign.

Bolsonaro described Gaspar as someone he has come to admire for his courage, honesty and achievements in public security. Gaspar previously worked as a prosecutor and headed the prosecutor's office in his state.

Gaspar has been a member of Congress since 2023, representing the northeastern state of Alagoas. This poor region has historically supported Lula. Gaspar said he and Bolsonaro would work together to turn Brazil into a fair and respectable country.
