A Learjet 60 business jet with nine people aboard crashed in a residential neighborhood in Palm Beach county, Florida, in the United States on Sunday, 1 November, bursting into a huge fireball on impact. Federal officials confirmed the crash. It remains unclear whether anyone on the ground was injured or whether any of those on the plane survived.

Flight route

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), the US agency that oversees civil aviation, said the aircraft was bound for the Bahamas. It had taken off from Austin-Bergstrom international airport in Texas.

What the footage shows

Video of the crash shows the plane plunging nose-first from the sky before erupting into a giant ball of flames beside a major roadway, inches from passing vehicles. The impact left a large crater in the pavement, with flames shooting from it near a utility pole.

The footage also shows chunks of pavement engulfed in fire. People gathered at the scene and expressed shock that the aircraft came down only feet from homes. Black smoke poured from the hole and drifted past palm trees swaying on a stormy day.

The source gives no information yet on the cause of the crash or on the investigation.
