In the NHL, North America's top professional ice hockey league, the Florida Panthers beat the Winnipeg Jets 5-1 in a regular-season game. Latvian forward Sandis Vilmanis played 12 minutes and 35 seconds but did not register a point. The result was Winnipeg's sixth consecutive loss.

How the game unfolded

Florida had scored three goals by the 11th minute of the first period. Carter Verhaeghe scored twice, while Brady Tkachuk, Niko Mikkola and Sam Reinhart each added one. Reinhart made it 4-1 after a pass from Brady Tkachuk, sending the puck under the crossbar.

The power play played a significant role, as the Panthers converted three of five chances. Over their last eight games, Florida has scored 13 power-play goals, while Winnipeg has failed to score on any of its 14 power-play opportunities across its last five games.

Florida finished a four-game road trip with two wins after losing its first two games. The Jets, meanwhile, have not won since their 4-1-1 start to the season.

The Tkachuk brothers' contribution

Matthew Tkachuk had four assists, Brady added a goal and two assists, and Seth Jones had three assists. Matthew has 20 points (4+16) in 13 games this season. He became the third player in Panthers history with at least 16 assists in a single calendar month, after Jonathan Huberdeau and Aleksander Barkov.

Goaltenders and Vilmanis

Florida goaltender Akira Schmid stopped 24 of 25 shots and earned his fourth win in five starts. The only player to beat him was Adam Lowry. Winnipeg's Clay Stevenson made 19 saves.

Vilmanis had two shots on goal, one more shot that missed, and four hits. He had no points or penalty minutes and no giveaways were recorded against him. The Latvian played almost the entire game at even strength. Radko Gudas played on Florida's blue line, while Uvis Balinskis was not in the lineup.
