Panthers captain Barkov won't need surgery, 6-8 week recovery expected
Florida Panthers captain Aleksander Barkov will not require surgery after a leg injury, with head coach Paul Maurice expecting him to miss 6-8 weeks.

Florida Panthers captain Aleksander Barkov suffered a leg injury during the October 2 game against the San Jose Sharks, taking an awkward fall while battling for the puck in the corner. The 31-year-old Finnish forward was unable to finish the game.
Online speculation had earlier suggested Barkov could be out for 10-12 weeks, but Panthers head coach Paul Maurice quickly dismissed those reports. He later told media that the actual timeline is considerably more optimistic, with the team expected to be without its captain for 6-8 weeks.
No surgery required
Importantly, Barkov will not need surgical intervention during his rehabilitation. Maurice described the 6-8 week window as the team's most accurate current estimate, while noting the recovery could end up being shorter or longer than expected.
This is not the first significant leg injury for Barkov. He missed all of last season due to injury, though that time the damage was to his right knee — this time it is his left leg that is affected.
As one of the Panthers' key players and team captain, Barkov's absence for several weeks will be a notable loss for Florida early in the season.
